I picked up this book on a whim wondering if it was going to be fluffy paranormal romance. I was more than pleasantly surprised by this book. Action, romance and a whole different take on Vampires, Werewolves and Elves, who are called "Powers". Linnett is a young lawyer starting work at a Vamp Law Firm and gets stuck on what seems like a dead end case. When she starts digging though, things get ugly and she narrowly misses getting killed several times. She is determined and unafraid to shake the status quo. Some of her bravado comes from being fostered in a Vamp family. She is a character any woman can identify with. Her case gets wrapped up, but her romance is ended in a cliffhanger. I did wonder if her success was a fluke, and when the next book came out as a hardback I waited to get a used copy. I just finished Box Office Poison and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. I will buy it in hardback. I hope Ms Bornikova has a long writing career!Tags : This Case Is Gonna Kill Me (The Linnet Ellery Series) [Phillipa Bornikova] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This Case Is Gonna Kill Me The Linnet Ellery Series Phillipa Bornikova 9780765326829 Books Reviews
I liked this book. The main character is a little weak (she slept with 2 different supernaturals in one week due to emotional issues) but the world building has potential. There seems to be nothing new with werewolves but there is promise with the vampire society. Vampires are not allowed to bite or change women. This is unusual because in most vamp stories, there is a strong sexual component to "feeding".
I would like to say that I am hopeful for the series but I have just finished the second book and it doesn't move the story line forward at all. Everything you know at the end of the second book is exactly what you knew at the end of the first book. The second book focuses on the fae and I have never been a huge fan of the them because in almost every story I have ever read, they are selfish people who look down on humans. So, let's build a superficial story around them and see how it goes because it's not enough to build a vampire/werewolf/lucky supernatural/supernatural horse and owner society. Let's throw some fae in too.
Sorry, I'm a little sarcastic considering the fact that I gave this book 4 stars. I just believe that people should know the risk in starting a new series when the second book doesn't hold up to the first.
I don't expect much usually in the supernatural genre. Vampires have been done to death (heh!) as well as werewolves but this book manages to put an interesting spin on it and an engaging character. I do hope that other authors will learn how to capture a new readers interest as this book did. I hope the author will write this genre and world again. Worth the read.
Funny, good mystery. Lots of action. Liked the feminist sensibility. Interesting take on the supernatural types. Very enjoyable and become wanting more
Solid urban fantasy that leans towards paranormal romance.
Good action, nice pacing, solid world-building, pleasant prose along with a quality underlying plot.
It isn't going to surprise you with the twists, but it reads like a nice prime time drama.
Just when you think the subject of vampires has been thoroughly explored, along comes THIS CASE IS GONNA KILL ME. It offers a unique take on vampires. They're male only, and they're lawyers. This makes it impossible for a female lawyer to get ahead. She can work in a "White Fang" law firm, but no matter how great a job she does, she can never make partner and be turned into a vampire, as can her human male colleagues. The heroine, Linnet Ellery, is understandably frustrated by this glass ceiling. Her legal and investigative skills are just as good as any vamp's, and she sets out to prove it. The writing style is humorous at times, and the story is a well-plotted urban fantasy.
I think I liked this book better than a lot of the other reviewers. I liked that the existence of vampires, werewolves and faeries was treated very offhandedly, as though everyone knows this is how the world is. I liked that things associated with the fantasy part of the story, like fostering in vampire households, wasn't over-explained.
Several reviewers objected to the character of the heroine. I thought it was a strength that the author wrote her as a complete character, with positive and negative characteristics. I even didn't mind that there was a lot of technical information about different horse breeds. I learned some new stuff. Since I plan to read the next book in the series, I'm hoping we don't go over the same info about horse breeds again though.
I'm not a fan of Bram Stoker; back in the day I loved Laurel Hamilton's Anita Blake, and don't get me started about Twilight! So it isn't like a vampire can't be well done, or a werewolf story. I am a fan of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden. That said, this book is a welcome relief from the bombardment of badly done vampire and werewolf stories.
Awesome debut novel. While I'm not disappointed that the book ended, I'm ready for another already. I've never met this author or heard of her before, but I love the way she words things. I want to know more about her world, and the way to learn about that is to read another book. Full of unanswered questions, she has a new fan in me. The book is rich in information without ever feeling "info-dumpy."
Many reviews seem to think the protagonist isn't someone they can relate to, but I sure did!
If you're leaning toward not buying this book, go to the kindle version and start reading the sample.
Congratulations to the author.
This book can stand with the best books I've encountered this year.
