Like others who should have read the item description more closely, I purchased this collection thinking it was a book of ghost stories that Roald Dahl had actually written himself. That was my fault. In my defense, however, I wonder why it couldn’t have been entitled “Ghost Stories collected by Roald Dahl”… Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, does it?

Dahl explains in his introduction that he had an idea for a television series back in 1958. He would use his writing prowess to write a screenplay for each episode based on an excellent ghost story. Dahl set out to find the best ghost stories for this project. He relates that by the end of a marathon reading session, he had read no fewer than 749 ghost stories. I’m pleased with his discernment.

However awesome the ghost story television series could have been, it flopped. What we’re left with is a remarkable collection of 14 ghost stories that one of my favorite storytellers read and loved. You may have heard of some of these authors, such as Sheridan Le Fanu. Others were new for me: Rosemary Timperley, Cynthia Asquith, and Mary Treadgold. My favorite out of the whole crop is Timperley’s “Harry.”

I feel that any fan of Roald Dahl’s short stories (the ones for grownups) will certainly admire this collection. Knowing that he recommended them tells me they’re going to be satisfying. As he remarks, “Good ghost stories are damnably difficult to write.” So let’s sit back and enjoy this spectacular little collection!

Roald Dahl Book of Ghost Stories Roald Dahl 8601420693913 Books Reviews

I read the description before purchasing this, as I always do, but somehow didn't realize this was a collection of Roald Dahl's favorite ghost stories, by OTHER AUTHORS. I'm going to be honest, we've only read the first story so far but it was entertaining. It kept us guessing and had my daughter (10) hiding her face in a pillow. We will be getting back into these stories soon, with the haunting season approaching, and I'll update my review then.
This review is about the actual printing flaws of the book. There are quite a few pages where all the words are blurry - going me a headache. Too bad I didn't see this earlier, as I didn't get to these stories until later.
I'm only half way through this collection, gathered by Roald Dahl and four out of 5 of the stories have been really exceptional. It is exciting to have horror stories that to not include blood and gore, just frightful surprises!
Read thru this book, which was requested by my grandson...Roald Dahl, best known as a children's author, was researching ghost stories for a possible TV series. He read HUNDREDS of stories, and distilled them down to just over 20. These are mostly old stories, and enjoyable, but a bit tame for these days. Which is a good thing, as a 7 year old will be getting this book for Christmas!
I went straight to Edith Wharton's story, "Afterward", having been a lover of her writing for more than thirty years, and I was not disappointed her ghost story, an inspired piece based on the idea that a house is haunted by a ghost one never knows one has seen until long afterward, gave me chills with its originality and execution. Despite its 1902 prose, its structure was as modern as any movie or television show today. I was amazed. And this is only the first selection I have read!
I wish I had realized that these stories were collected by Roald Dahl and not written by him. The quality overall is not that great. There are two very good stories ("Harry" by Rosemary Timperley and "In the Tube" by E.F. Benson) but otherwise the stories are a bit routine for lovers of the genre. The stories are all quite old, although the volume was first published in 1983. This means that some of them are written in a somewhat pompous and puffed up style. Roald Dahl's introduction reads as somewhat sexist by today's standards and it is hard to understand why he takes up so much print space to air his unflattering views about female writers.

I would suggest that lovers of ghost stories look to Joe Hill (The Heart-shaped box), Shirley Jackson (The Haunting of Hill House), Susan Hill (The Woman in Black), Yangsze Choo (The Ghost Bride) or Sarah Waters (The Little Stranger). Sheridan Le Fanu also wrote short ghost stories.

This volume has been discounted to $5.00 or so. I now understand why.
Despite Roald Dahl's name, the book is for adults or those who can appreciate a ghost story without the vulgarity or gore of contemporary work.
